Accounting Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

A degree with 360 degrees of possibilities

A major in accounting will prepare you for a variety of career opportunities in public accounting, corporate accounting, governmental & nonprofit organizations, as well as many others. Moreover, many of our majors have successful careers in the field of financial management and other related areas.

Our program meets the educational qualifications for licensure as a New York State Certified Public Accountant (CPA). After completing our program you can apply to sit for the CPA exam in New York State. You will also be in a position to pursue other professional certifications, such as Certified Management Accountants (CMA), Certified Financial Management (CFM), and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). The accounting program also prepares you for graduate level studies, if you choose to do so.

Our degree requirements in accounting contain a strong business component, which makes it easy for an accounting major to earn a second major in business.

Our accounting program offers real-life experience and internship opportunities

Would you like to earn $16,000 for a six-month co-op and gain a great work experience with "Big Blue"? You should look into our co-op program with IBM . Would you like to participate in local or regional internships with CPA firms, corporations, governments and non-profit organizations? We are continuously cultivating opportunities for you at Plattsburgh State and we strongly encourage you to participate and share your experiences with other students. It is our way of encouraging students to enhance their leadership development, team building skills, and experiential learning while pursuing their undergraduate accounting education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Work one on one with our faculty

The accounting faculty works closely together with students to provide the best educational experience possible. We encourage and mentor our students to be academically successful and reach their career and personal goals while at Plattsburgh State. Our small class sizes (average is 25 -30) allow our faculty to increase class participation and make the educational experience more enjoyable. From the start, every accounting major is assigned an accounting faculty to work closely with. We as accounting faculty believe in "Partnership in Education." Each accounting faculty aspires to teach students to work hard from the start, to insure sound academic advisement, and to encourage students to explore different career opportunities available to them.
