Learn about Canada through Experience
The Canadian Studies program is the most comprehensive multidisciplinary undergraduate program in the United States. It has a national reputation for its innovative and unique courses in every discipline developed in the last 37 years.
The Canadian Studies program will give you a stronger academic focus by experiencing:
- The integration with faculty, students, and staff from U.S., Canada and from around the world on our campus;
- Intercultural experiences in Canada;
- An appreciation of Canada's cultures;
- Bilingualism and multiculturalism;
- A vibrant international atmosphere on campus.
Opportunities to Study at Canadian Universities
Canadian Studies students have the opportunity to study in one of the many prestigious universities in Canada. The program has partnerships with McGill University, Concordia University in Montreal, Carleton University in Ottawa, and fifteen other universities in Quebec. Students interested in strengthening their French language skills can avail themselves of the French Immersion program for up to a year at Universite' Laval in Quebec City, Universite' de Montreal and others throughout Quebec.
The Canadian Studies program participates with the Center for the Study of Canada to send two students a year to study at select universities in Canada through the Killam Fellowship program. Kevin Ferguson and Lindsey Jackiel were two of the recepients in 2003-2004. Janine Gautier is our new Killam Fellow in 2005-2006. Several other scholarships, some up to full tuition, are available on a semester or annual basis.
Internships
Students can acquire international opportunities and experiences in Canada through internships in Canadian and American Consulates, Quebec Delegations, Trade and Economic development offices, Historical Associations, Art Galleries in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. Students in Canadian Studies are encouraged to work on scholarly projects sponsored by faculty members on an independent study basis. Outstanding academic achievement by students in Canadian content courses is recognized with special certificates and awards.
Careers and Graduate Studies
Graduates of Canadian Studies can pursue a variety of careers or enroll in graduate studies because of the multidisciplinary preparation in the program. Canadian Studies alums are successful in careers ranging from teaching to international trade, intergovernmental affairs, public relations, economic development, marketing, travel and tourism.
The Canada House
The Canadian Studies program is located at the Center for the Study of Canada on the Plattsburgh State University campus. The Center for the Study of Canada is dedicated to promoting Canada in the United States, and has been recognized as a National Resource Center by the U.S. Department of Education since 1983. The Center is at the forefront of innovative Canadian focused curriculum, research and program initiatives.
