Plattsburgh State's Committment to Professional Education

University Mission Statement

Plattsburgh State University of New York prepares a diverse student population for a wide range of professional careers, providing undergraduates with a strong foundation in the liberal arts, graduate students with advanced professional preparation, and all students with a commitment to academic excellence, ethical values, life-long learning, and responsible citizenship within a global community. The university takes advantage of the natural surroundings, Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains, in selected academic programs and courses, in recreational activities, and in community involvement and services.

The Mission of Professional Teacher Education

The professional education faculty at Plattsburgh State University of New York engages in the professional development of educators at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We strive to prepare educators as scholars, teachers, and colleagues who are anchored in the university's commitment to the liberal arts, endeavor to practice effective pedagogy, reflect critically upon teaching and the learning process, and exemplify ethical, humane and democratic principles within a complex, technological, global society. Concurrent with academic study, our professional teacher education programs call upon our candidates and school leaders to engage in a process of socialization into the profession through early and continuous learning experiences and mentorship. In partnership with university departments, schools and communities, our professional education programs prepare reflective, facilitative educators at the initial level and proficient reflective educators at the advanced levels. Both levels emphasize scholarship, research, and exploration of effective practices in the education professions

The Conceptual Framework Model

Professional education that builds reflective scholars, teachers, and colleagues is the underlying premise of the Plattsburgh State University of New York's conceptual framework model, which provides structure and direction to the work of the professional teacher education faculty. The framework emphasizes consistency of the following elements: shared vision; an enumeration of our guiding principles and commitments; an explanation of the philosophical foundations that support the guiding principles; statements of diversity and technology; the context for alignment of candidate performance with professional, state and institutional standards; and the specifications and student outcomes of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions the faculty regard as most significant.

Shared Vision

The shared vision of the professional education faculty ensures coherence among content knowledge, pedagogy, and field experiences. Candidate performance is assessed in both a formative and summative manner for all teacher preparation programs. Our shared vision reflects a commitment to diversity, a desire to integrate the use of technology across the curriculum, and a dedication to prepare our candidates to work with students with culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds and students with disabilities - all students. We are educators who are committed to preparing candidates who are reflective thinkers and who commit to action what they have learned - to teach and enlighten others.

Guiding Commitments
