Information For

Buying A Computer

Like any "large ticket" item, there are a lot of things to consider.  Each vendor offers different options, complete with inscrutable "nuances" that make comparison difficult.

However, there are a few basic characteristics on whic you can focus to help you narrow the field.  The table below provides recommended specifications for most users.  Certain, higher-end applications may require an adjustment to these specs.

Characteristic Recommended
Processor Speed (MHz) 2 GHz or higher, Celeron/Pentium IV class processor
RAM (Megabytes - MB) 256 or more
Hard Drive (Gigabytes - GB) 20 or 40 or more
CD-ROM Any speed will usually due. DVD or CD-R/CD-RW optional
Modem (for off-campus users) 56K (V.90)
Ethernet (for on-campus users)

Twisted-Pair (wireless optional and is available in some parts of the campus)

Monitor (Diagonal Size) 15" or larger
Printer Bubble Jet or Ink Jet Printer
Software Office Automation Suite (MS Office, etc.)

The speed with which innovation takes place and the amount of competition in this market make choosing a computer difficult at best. For that reason, we provide "open dating" for our specs. The following table details our thoughts on machine selection for the date listed above. While we recommend "Pentium class" processors, this does not mean one must purchase only Intel products. Comparable processors from AMD and processors from other vendors are fine as well. Check this page frequently or subscribe to this page to stay current.
